Steak Knives Part 6 - Gallery

Okay, so this is going to be a bit strange. I recently got married, and made steak knives for the gentlemen members of our wedding party. I've mad a multi-post series about *how* I made them, but since most people aren't going to be nearly as interested in how I picked the finish as they are in the finished product, I'm going to post the gallery pictures first, and the process posts next. So, without further ado, enjoy Steak Knives Part 6 (the first to be posted).

Walnut Knife Strip, Two Strips

Two strips, both walnut

Honestly, you've all seen this before. This is just a way of showing how the same species can vary in appearance in subtle ways. Both strips are walnut. The top has lighter coloration, and a little more variation between light and dark in its grain pattern, the bottom strip is a very uniform color. Otherwise, nothing really to see here, except, of course, you're welcome to buy one.

Hickory Wine Cork Trivet

So I made another wine cork trivet. The design is essentially the same as the last one: hardwood border with mitred corners, wine cork center to safely lift hot pots and pans above the wood. This one I made from hickory, which is a very hard domestic hardwood with brown coloring and dark brown streaking grain patterning. It's for sale over at Etsy. More pics after the jump:

A fellow out in sunny California bought a knife strip from me and wanted it extra long. He was kind enough to send me a picture of it it installed and with knives on it. Just in case anyone was curious if the magnets were strong enough to really hold a bunch of knives I present photographic evidence. Those cleavers look awful heavy.

We recently went to Napa and tasted a whole lot of really good wine (as ya do). I snagged corks from the places we stopped, and eventually put them together into this trivet.

Someone in Florida contacted me recently asking if I could make her a knife strip from cypress. I said sure, but I don't have any cypress. She mailed me a board (it's more common down there than it is up here), and I made a knife strip for her.

Now I just need a real katana

The thing about magnetic knife strips is that there are plenty of reasons why you wouldn't want one in their kitchen. You might have kids and not want the blades exposed. You might have overhead cabinets that make the strip impractical to hang on a wall, or maybe a ceramic backsplash that you don't want to drill through to mount the strip.

With that in mind, I figured I'd make a variant on a traditional knife block. Instead of the traditional cut out slots for your knives, I put together a more versatile take on a knife block that uses bamboo skewers to hold the knives.

Oh, I suppose you want to actually see it. I guess you'll just have to read on...

I sold another knife strip. It was another custom order, this time in walnut. It turned out great.

So far everyone who has gotten something has gotten a post about it. I'm going to keep that up until (and this would be a good problem to have) I have too many orders to keep it up.

Chopping Block 1.0: Wedding Gift Edition

Congratulations Sergio and Jonathon (though honor compels me to suggest you swap that "o" for an "a"). Until the day comes that your wedding is just a "wedding" I get to say "happy gay wedding" (and see if I get a spike in google traffic from angry people searching for "happy gay weddings"). In anticipation, I have stocked an ample amount of Xanax for Gay Summer Weddings. Can't wait for those tickets to Italy!

But, in all seriousness, I'm thrilled for the two of you, and am very grateful that I made the cut and received an invitation. I made a chopping block for you guys. Cutting Board 1.0

This is a cutting board/chopping block. It's roughly 12 inches by 12 inches and one and a half inches thick. The main surface is red oak, the border is hard maple. All I did to finish it was wipe it down with food-safe butcher's block oil, which is a common mineral oil. Also, that is an avocado; they are delicious.
